To Rain or Not to Rain: Correlating GOES Flare Class and Coronal Rain Statistics

چکیده

Post-flare arcades are well-known components of solar flare evolution, which have been observed for several decades. Coronal rain, cascades catastrophically-cooled plasma, outline the loops and provide eye-catching evidence recent flare. These events acknowledged to be common, but scientific literature does not include any statistical overview documenting just how common phenomenon actually is. This study reviews Solar Dynamics Observatory Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (SDO AIA) observations 241 flares collected from Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) database between 2011 2018. The cover entire strength range C, M, X GOES classes, distributed evenly across SDO-observed majority Cycle 24. We find that post-flare arcade rain occurs nearly all most M-class flares, it tapers off rapidly within C-class flares. There appears a cut-off point around C5, below occurrence drops significantly. is also general positive correlation class average duration events. in appear track with sunspot number, providing potential new tool estimating, if predicting, cycle strength. Furthermore, condensations suppressed shortest-length observed, suggesting active region heating height-constrained. results open up further avenues future research, including methods estimate energy deposition gain greater insight into steady heating.

Rain Heights Over the Oceans: Relation to Rain Rates

Rain over the oceans causes attenuation of communication and radar signals for satellites and backscatter to satellite radars. To determine the attenuation and backscatter, one must know the height of the rain in a storm, and must be able to find it from a satellite measurement likely to be available. Microwave radiometers on satellites can provide estimates of rain rates, and therefore relatin...

Tropical Rain Classification and Estimation of Rain from Z-r (reflectivity-rain Rate) Relationships

A Z-R relation is derived using a data set which consists of nine rain events selected from Singapore’s drop size distribution. Rain events are separated into convective and stratiform types of rain using two methods: the Gamache-Houze method, a simple threshold technique, and the Atlas-Ulbrich method. In the Atlas-Ulbrich method, the variability of the rain integral parameters R, Z, Nw, D0 and...

Acid Rain

Pure water has a pH of 7.0 (neutral); however, natural, unpolluted rainwater actually has a pH of about 5.6 (acidic).[Recall from Experiment 1 that pH is a measure of the hydrogen ion (H+) concentration.] The acidity of rainwater comes from the natural presence of three substances (CO2, NO, and SO2) found in the troposphere (the lowest layer of the atmosphere). As is seen in Table I, carbon dio...

Rain structure transfer using an exemplar rain image for synthetic rain image generation

This letter proposes a simple method of transferring rain structures of a given exemplar image (rain image) into a target image (non‐rain image). Given the exemplar rain image and its corresponding masked rain image, rain patches including real‐life rain structures are extracted randomly, and then residual rain patches are obtained by subtracting those rain patches from their mean patches. Next...
